In a recent essay, the political writer Jonah Goldberg stated, “Conservatism is a form of gratitude.”

I couldn’t agree more, and I love the way Goldberg links the political views of most Idahoans with one of our deepest, most positive emotions. Because, as Goldberg explains, “we conserve only what we are grateful for.”

As the husband of a beautiful wife, the father of five amazing children, and a first-time grandpa, I have so much to be grateful for. As a conservative, I am grateful for being an Idahoan, and I wish to “conserve” – in the truest sense of the word – the values and ideas that make Idaho great.

When I first ran for Congress, I promised the people of Idaho that I would be a leader for conservative values, including freedom, limited government, and strict adherence to the Constitution. This month, the American Conservative Union (ACU) recognized that I am keeping my promises by honoring me with their annual “Award for Conservative Excellence.” The ACU scored all members of Congress on 25 votes we took in 2017 that were important to conservatives. I was one of only 12 House members who earned a perfect 100 percent score.

ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp said, “Rep. Labrador has proved again that he is dedicated to the conservative values of Idaho and working toward conservative solutions that benefit all. His perfect scorecard in 2017 demonstrates his commitment to principled conservative leadership.”

The ACU is a great organization, and I appreciate Matt and everyone at ACU for their outstanding leadership.

Another great organization is Family Research Council Action (FRC Action), which is helping to lead the fight for traditional, conservative values.

FRC Action recently scored every member of Congress on nine votes we took in 2017. Having scored 100 percent, I received their annual“True Blue Award."

“Rep. Labrador deserves praise for his unwavering commitment to stand for life, family, marriage, and religious liberty,” said FRC Action President Tony Perkins. “Idahoans should be encouraged to know they have a member of Congress such as Rep. Labrador who has come alongside other members and our president to begin the work of rebuilding our nation, and protecting the values that made America great.”

Being pro-life and pro-family is extremely important to me, and I am thankful to Tony and FRC Action for everything they’re doing to advance these values.

Given the power of special interests, it’s essential that conservatives unite and stand together. We are doing that, and we must continue to do that.

Since the start of this Congress, several other conservative organizations have recognized me for my voting record. These include:

  • National Taxpayers Union (the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award”)
  • FreedomWorks (the “FreedomFighter Award”)
  • National Association of Manufacturers (the “Manufacturing Legislative Excellence Award”)
  • U.S. Chamber of Commerce (the “Spirit of Enterprise Award”)
  • Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (“Taxpayer Hero Award”)
  • Club for Growth (the “Defender of Economic Freedom Award”)

“We need more people like Congressman Labrador standing up for liberty and opportunity,” said Club for Growth President David McIntosh. “People deserve to know whether the voting records of their representatives match their rhetoric. Congressman Labrador has truly walked the talk and is fighting for Idaho First District taxpayers.”

I am grateful to all of these organizations because they are fighting to protect the ideas and values that make America great. As conservatives, we know that we live in the greatest country in the world and the greatest country in history. We are grateful for the country that’s been bestowed to us, and we are going to do everything we can to “conserve” it and to keep it strong for generations to come.
